Berries abound in late summer in Alaska. They are an important food source for the bears that will soon be hibernating. Before their long sleep, the bears gorge themselves on as many berries as they can find, trying to gain enough fat stores to last through the long winter. But not all of the berries go to the bears; many other species, including humans, like them just as much as the bears. Indeed, some varieties are quite tasty.
